About Us

Student-driven innovation
in drones & autonomy

The ASU Drone Devils advance student-driven innovation in drone and autonomous systems through hands-on engineering, collaborative project development and interdisciplinary learning. Members get practical experience in the design, fabrication, programming and testing of unmanned aerial systems, while building a strong foundation in teamwork, leadership and professional communication.

We're building a community where curiosity, technical growth and real-world problem solving come together to push the boundaries of drone technology — and honestly, where a bunch of people who like flying things hang out twice a week.

What We Build

Projects

Four member-led build teams are running this year. Every one of them is open — you can join any project at any point in the semester, whether you've soldered before or not.

Fall 2026 · In Design

The Ekranoplan

A ground-effect vehicle (GEV) — a low-altitude flier custom designed around the principle of ground effect, where the cushion of high-pressure air trapped between wing and surface gives you far more lift for the same power.

  • Goal: create a scale ground-effect UAV
  • Custom airframe designed from scratch, not a kit
  • Hands-on aerodynamics: stagnation overpressure, wingtip vortex behaviour, surface skimming

CAD & Simulation

The Diamondback Drone

A large, high-speed, highly maneuverable EDF-powered UAV based on modern fighter-jet design — the club's most ambitious airframe.

  • Uses CAD modeling and simulated flight testing before anything gets cut
  • Serves as a test platform for future jet-based drones
  • Great entry point if you want CFD, SolidWorks or composites experience

3D Printing · Tilt-Rotor

The VTOL Fixed Wing

A mini-scale, fully 3D-printed VTOL fixed wing: takes off vertically like a quad, then transitions to efficient forward flight on the wing.

Build photos coming soon — this one is still on the bench.

  • Tilt-rotor transition mechanism
  • Targeting sub-250 g so it stays outside FAA registration requirements
  • Focused on flight efficiency and printable, repairable structures

Biomimetics

The Ornithopter

An unmanned aerial vehicle that flies by flapping its wings — like a bird or a bat — rather than using a propeller.

  • Deep experience in mechanical system design: linkages, gearing, compliance
  • A genuinely unusual aerodynamic design problem — unsteady, flapping-wing lift
  • One of the most beginner-friendly projects to jump into

6:00 – 8:00 PM

Open lab time. Build, solder, print, fly the sim, or just come see what everyone's working on. Bring a laptop if you have one.

Fly Days

  • Every 3–4 weeks, usually on weekends
  • Announced (ideally) two weeks in advance
  • Basin 115 wing racing, or other local parks
  • Open to other clubs, collaborations, and family & friends
  • Transportation is provided

Before you fly:

  • TRUST certification is required — no matter what
  • Do not start flying before someone has cleared the airspace
  • Follow the battery safety rules, every time

Missing Meetings

This is not a job. This is not a class. You can show up whenever you want — it's a for-fun club. But we'd love to see you. :)

Non-Negotiable

Safety & Club Rules

We fly real aircraft with real batteries in a real lab. These are the rules that keep the club, the space and everyone in it safe.

Flight Safety

  • Regulations: Part 107 commercial pilot's licenses, TRUST certificates, drone registration, Remote ID, waivers
  • Airspace: controlled, uncontrolled, restricted airspace, TFRs, FRIAs, LAANC
  • Proof of completed FAA TRUST certification is required before flying

Lab Safety

  • Batteries are the most dangerous thing we use — LiPo cells and more
  • Batteries must be charged and plugged in downstairs
  • Unattended = unplugged. No exceptions
  • Know where the fire extinguishers and fire exits are
  • Respect the Do Not Touch (DNT) items
  • Solder with ventilation — watch the fumes
  • Safe propeller usage at all times

Lab Usage

  • The lab is used during club time only, and only with four or more club members present
  • Certain items and spaces are not ours — don't touch them
  • We clean up and pack everything back into the upstairs room at the end of every meeting: soldering station, black tables, upstairs room
  • If something goes wrong in this space, it falls on our advisor. Don't do that to him.

Club Rules

  • Operate equipment only when properly trained and authorized
  • Follow all university policies, local laws and FAA regulations
  • Use required safety equipment when directed
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, accidents, injuries or equipment malfunctions
  • Conduct yourself in a way that promotes the safety of participants and spectators
  • Damages over $200 are evaluated case by case — reimbursement is unlikely to be required if you were following club rules
Only officers can open the yellow safe. And nobody — nobody — sets off the roof alarm.
